CNN political analyst David Gregory claimed former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is considering a run for president in 2020, after he re-registered as a Democrat Wednesday.

Bloomberg shared a post on Instagram showing him officially re-joining the Democratic Party as a way of providing “checks and balances” to America.

“He’s positioning himself to run in 2020,” Gregory said on CNN’s “New Day.”

“[Bloomberg] took a hard look at running for president as an independent and he and his team concluded that he couldn’t win going that direction,” he said. (RELATED: Michael Bloomberg Takes First Step Towards Democratic Presidential Run In 2020)

“So, being a Democrat would be his best opportunity. He’s got plenty of money, we know that. He’s a billionaire. He could self-fund his campaign. So money’s not an issue.”

Gregory claimed Bloomberg is more in line with the Democratic Party on major issues like gun control and climate change and would feel right at home, but might be questioned on some of his conservative stances.

“He’s certainly right with the Democratic base on certain key issues,” Gregory said.

“Think about gun restrictions, climate change. But he is more conservative on other issues, on fiscal issues. That could be an impediment. The question is whether he will be trusted by the grassroots of the Democratic Party, that is getting more progressive. And again, you’d have to win in those early progressive states — namely Iowa and the Iowa caucuses.”

Gregory said anything is possible for Bloomberg, especially given what happened with Republicans in 2016.

“Could he do that? But one thing I think we can conclude is that the Democratic field in 2020 is shaping up as big, just like Republicans were in 2016, and it’ll be very intriguing to watch him in that mix,” he concluded.
