Former advisor to President Donald Trump and current CNN political commentator Steve Cortes told CNN host Chris Cuomo that he is part of the left, which began a heated back-and-forth on air Wednesday night.

Cortes was on the show with fellow contributor Symone Sanders, who was the former press secretary for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. They were discussing Fox News’ Laura Ingraham’s comments on immigration from Tuesday night.

“Your views on immigration will have zero impact and zero influence on a House dominated by Democrats who want to replace you, the American voters, with newly amnestied citizens and an ever-increasing number of chain migrants,” Ingraham said.

“Right, exactly, newly amnestied. Meaning they didn’t belong here in the first place, Chris. So they got amnesty because if the Democrats had their way, they would give amnesty to illegal aliens who don’t belong here. This is a crucial difference. And you and others on the left constantly try to—” Cortes stated.

Cuomo fired back, “Why do I get brushed with being on the left back, just ’cause I test you?”

“Because you’re on the left, let’s be honest,” Cortes added.

“What am I on the left of — What am I wrong about? Because I don’t think that what you’re saying is accurate, that means that I’m on the left?” Cuomo responded.

“No. Are you telling me that you’re fair with the president? Are you telling me you’re not an opposition advocate,” Cortes asked.

Cuomo concluded, “100%. 100%. I test what comes out of his mouth. When he does something that’s right, we talk about it. When he does something that’s wrong, we talk about that.”

Cortes, as a Trump supporter, often gets into heated debates while on the CNN nightly lineup of shows. Last week, he scolded host Don Lemon for criticizing rapper Kanye West and for saying West’s mom was rolling in her grave after seeing him meet with Trump.
