Google released a list of the most searched terms, people, athletes and news stories of 2018. Some of the results are surprising.
2018 was marked with political turmoil, untimely celebrity deaths and rarer global events (think: Winter Olympics, World Cup, and the Royal Wedding). Since several celebrities died unexpectedly this year, some of the top 10 trending searches were dominated by key words like Anthony Bourdain, Avicii, Mac Miller, and Kate Spade. According to Google Trends, the top five most searched terms were:
- World Cup
- Avicii
- Mac MIller
- Stan Lee
- Black Panther
The top news searches:
- World Cup
- Hurricane Florence
- Mega Millions Result
- Royal Wedding
- Election Results
And the top searched people:
- Meghan Markle
- Demi Lovato
- Sylvester Stallone
- Logan Paul
- Khloe Kardashian
Top searched athletes:
- Tristan Thompson
- Alexis Sanchez
- Lindsey Vonn
- Shaun White
- Khabib Nurmagomedov
To commemorate the past year in search, Google also released a video celebrating human decency.
“In a year of ups and downs, the world searched for ‘good’ more than ever before,” Google captions its video.
