The Green Bay Packers have apparently reached out to former Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell.

ProFootballTalk reported the following Wednesday night:

According to multiple league sources, former Lions and Colts coach Jim Caldwell has interviewed for the Green Bay opening.

The interview comes at a time when the Packers are wrapping up the season with Joe Philbin serving as interim head coach, following the firing of Mike McCarthy in his 13th year on the job. On Sunday, quarterback Aaron Rodgers seemed to express a preference for Philbin to get the full-time job.

I don’t understand this at. Jim Caldwell? The same Jim Caldwell that coached the Detroit Lions across Lake Michigan for several years? Are we talking about the same guy?

This seems so bizarre to me. I understand the aspect of Caldwell having history working with elite quarterbacks like Matthew Stafford and Peyton Manning when he was with the Colts, but he didn’t exactly beat the brakes off of anybody as a head coach.

The Lions were solid under his tutelage and much better than before he arrived in town, but they weren’t contending for a Super Bowl by any metric or measurement.

What makes anybody think he’s going to come into Green Bay and mesh with Aaron Rodgers? That seems like an incredible gamble to make.

That’s not to say Caldwell isn’t a good coach. Again, he actually managed to get Detroit to the playoffs multiple times, which is a hell of an accomplishment. (RELATED: Here Are The Best Moments From Week 15 Of The NFL Season)

I’m simply saying that working with Aaron Rodgers is a different kind of beast.

Of course, there’s no doubt the Packers will keep interviewing people along the way. I’m just a little surprised Caldwell got a call. I didn’t see that one coming at all.
