Former Vice President Joe Biden blasted President Donald Trump Wednesday for fostering the rise of white supremacist groups and only reluctantly condemning them.
“It’s both clear in language and in code this president has fanned the fumes of white supremacy,” Biden said Wednesday. “His mouthing of the words written for him, condemning white supremacists this week, I don’t believe fooled anyone at home or abroad.”
The former vice president spoke in Burlington, Iowa, the same day Trump visited Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, in the aftermath of mass shootings. Biden bashed Trump for fanning the flames of white supremacy, pointing out examples of extremists who support the president.
“Energetic embrace of this president by the darkest hearts and most hate-filled minds in this country say it all,” Biden added. (RELATED: Biden’s Upcoming Iowa Speech Says Trump ‘Fanned The Flames Of White Supremacy’: Report)
Biden referenced white nationalist Richard Spencer who celebrated Trump’s election by saying “Hail Trump,” at an alt-right conference where the Nazi salute was allegedly used. He also mentioned David Duke, the former leader of the Klu Klux Klan, allegedly saying, “This is why we voted for Donald Trump, because he said he’s going to take back the country.”
“He knows it,” Biden told the crowd. “He saw it.”
