Anthony Hopkins celebrated 45 years of sobriety with a touching video he posted on Twitter encouraging people to stay positive.

In the clip, the 82-year-old actor acknowledged that a new year was coming and noted that it’s been a “tough year, full of grief and sadness” for “many, many, many people.” The post was noted by CNN in a piece published Wednesday. “But forty-five years ago today, I had a wake-up call,” Hopkins shared about deciding to be sober. “I was headed for disaster, I was drinking myself to death. I’m not preachy, but I got a message.” (RELATED: Report: Demi Lovato ‘Still Sober And Committed To Her Sobriety’ After Overdose)

“A little thought that said, ‘Do you want to live or die?'” he explained. “And I said, ‘I want to live.’ And suddenly the relief came and my life has been amazing.”

The “Hannibal” star admitted his sobriety hasn’t come easy and said he has had his “off days” and even “little bits of doubt and all that.”

“All in all, I say hang in there,” the superstar actor shared. “Today is the tomorrow you were so worried about yesterday.”

“Young people, don’t give up,” he added. “Just keep in there. Keep fighting. Be bold. Mighty forces will come to your aid. That’s sustained me through my life.”

He closed out the video by wishing people a Happy New Year and stating that it’s “going to be the best year.”
