Serena Williams backed Meghan Markle on Sunday following her and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.

“Meghan Markle, my selfless friend, lives her life – and leads by example – with empathy and compassion. She teaches me everyday what it means to be truly noble. Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she’s experienced,” the tennis star in a statement.

Markle told Winfrey she had considered suicide while she was actively working within the royal family, according to CBS News. Her husband said the royal family didn’t back Markle regarding her mental health, noting “it was not a conversation to be had.”

Markle told Winfrey during the interview that someone spoke with Prince Harry about their son, Archie, over worries “about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” according to a separate CBS News report. Markle added there were many conversations concerning Archie’s skin color and about what impact it would have in the future. Markle didn’t identify who had the exchange with her husband, saying it “would be very damaging to them,” according to CBS News.

Winfrey said Prince Harry clarified it was neither Queen Elizabeth II nor Prince Phillip “that were part of those conversations,” “CBS This Morning” tweeted.

“I know first hand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of color to minimize us, to break us down and demonize us,” Williams said.

“We must recognize our obligation to decry malicious, unfounded gossip and tabloid journalism,” Williams said. “The mental health consequences of systemic oppression and victimization are devastating, isolating and all too often lethal.”

Williams further said she wants a society based on respect for “Meghan’s daughter, my daughter, your daughter.”

“Keep in your memory the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self control. Against such things there is no law,” the tennis player said.
