Macron approached the crowd and began to greet them, shaking hands with one man who then shouted, “Down with Macron!” and slapped the president across the left side of his face. Macron’s security detail quickly pulled him away from the metal fence, and two arrests were reportedly made.
The Elysee released a statement following the incident: “A man indeed tried to hit the President of the Republic. We have no further comments at this point. Exchanges with the crowd and handshakes resumed. The trip continues.”
