A New Jersey mom was caught on camera collapsing to the ground in hysterics after learning her two-year-old daughter was left in a hot car for hours and died, according to reports.

The tragic incident unfolded Tuesday in Franklin Township around 2 p.m. The parents of the child were apparently unaware their daughter had been left in the car until cops knocked on the door of their home, according to NBC New York, which cited neighbors.

“They were just screaming in pain and anguish,” one neighbor told NBC New York. “[The mother] collapsed to the ground and [the father] went to console her. They’re great parents. I’ve seen them be very loving and doting on their daughters.”

“I heard the dad screaming uncontrollably and then I heard the mom start wailing, really sobbing,” the neighbor continued, according to ABC 7 New York.

The mother was so distraught that an ambulance took her away after an officer tried to console her, according to another neighbor cited by NBC New York in a video. (RELATED: A Police Woman Left Her Baby In The Car For A Booty Call With Her Supervisor. Now, She’s Pleaded Guilty To Manslaughter)

Neighbor Alex Krstavski wondered how the tragedy could have happened.

“How can that happen? How do you forget? I guess we’re all forgetful, I’ve forgotten things in the car. But how do you forget the toddler, you know? I don’t know,” he said, according to NBC New York.

An investigation into the toddler’s death is underway.
