First responders rescued a man who had been trapped in a scrap metal shredding machine for approximately three hours Thursday, reports say.

The employee at Scrap-It Inc., a recycling business located in Everett, Massachusetts, got his leg stuck in the machine at around 3:30 p.m., WCVB reported. EMTs and firefighters responded to the scene and, with the help of Boston Fire’s technical rescue unit and a doctor, worked for hours to remove the man from the shredder, according to the outlet.

First responders pulled the man out and transported him to a local hospital at around 6:30 p.m.. (RELATED: Two Workers Die After Massive 80-Foot-High Coal Pile Collapses)

In video footage released by WCVB, first responders can be seen surrounding the shredding machine and working to extricate the man. One firefighter can be seen setting up an IV bag, and the doctor, dressed in a blue gown and a surgical mask, appears to be tending to the trapped employee.

The Everett Fire Department claimed a firefighter was injured during the rescue, but is expected to make a full recovery after being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital, CBS Boston reported.

“My thoughts are with the accident victim and I am grateful for the EFD [Everett Fire Department] and all the first responders for their efforts in a difficult rescue operation,” Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria said, according to CBS Boston.
