Country star Luke Bryan issued an explanation Sunday on Twitter after he allowed Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to join him on stage during a concert.

Bryan brought DeSantis out on stage during a performance Friday night.

“We’re gonna have some fun and we’re gonna raise some money tonight for the great state of Florida, alright?” Bryan said to his fans. “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the stage, Governor Ron DeSantis!”

The crowd erupted in applause, according to a video of the moment shared on Twitter. (RELATED: 30% Of The Crowd Just Pissed In Their Pants’: Country Legends Prank Knoxville Audience)

DeSantis later thanked Bryan, writing on Twitter, “Thanks for letting me crash the party last night, [Luke Bryan]!”

After receiving backlash from some people in the social media comments, Bryan tried to issue an explanation as to why he brought out the “very polarizing” DeSantis.

“I typically don’t respond to stuff when I’m getting run down on a social platform but here’s the deal. I understand Governor Desantis [sic] is a very polarizing figure,” Bryan wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. “But I grew up in a country where if a governor ask [sic] you if they can come and raise awareness to help victims of a natural disaster you help. I’ve generally stayed out of politics throughout my career.”

Bryan said he wouldn’t have felt right if he didn’t raise awareness about Hurricane Ian, which slammed the Sunshine State in September.

“Raise awareness, have a little fun between the GA and FL college fans before the game and do what I love on stage,” Bryan concluded his statement.
