Abortion was the most likely issue to be considered “extremely important” to Democrats in a Gallup poll released Monday.

Among Democrats, 51% said abortion was extremely important, compared to 38% of Independents and 37% of Republicans, the poll found. The Gallup poll had abortion ranked higher than other recent polls, with 42% of registered voters describing the issue as extremely important, but that was driven primarily by Democratic voters.

Abortion was only the fifth most important issue for Republicans, who were most likely to consider the economy extremely important.

Overall, 49% of voters ranked the economy as extremely important, followed by abortion, crime, gun policy and immigration. (RELATED: SCOTUS’ Smackdown Of Roe Is Already Leading To Fewer Abortions)

Numerous polls have found that abortion is not a top issue among the general electorate, despite Democratic candidates zeroing in on the issue in the months since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Democratic super PACs and campaigns spent about $18 million on abortion messaging for the 2022 midterm election cycle, tripling what they spent in 2018.

Abortion has soared in importance to voters in the past decade: 17% of voters considered the issue “extremely important” in 2002, compared to 27% in 2006 and 42% in 2022, according to Gallup.

The poll surveyed 1,009 registered voters Oct. 3 – 23 with a 4% margin of error.
