SPOILER ALERT: Details in this article may divulge information about the shows discussed here that are not yet known by certain readers.

Rumors are swirling around whether Kevin Costner’s character on hit cowboy drama “Yellowstone” could be killed off in a similar fashion to “Succession” lead character Logan Roy, thanks largely to a report published Thursday.

Sources reportedly told Showbiz411 that Costner’s John Dutton character will be killed off when “Yellowstone” resumes later this year, possibly in the fall. “The whole team is down in Texas now meeting, and trying to figure out how to do it. I’m sure [‘Yellowstone’ co-creator] Taylor Sheridan has it worked out more or less,” the source added. “We all knew Kevin would leave eventually.”

This fate is reportedly going to be similar to that of HBO’s “Succession” lead character, Logan Roy, who died in the third episode of the show’s final season, Variety reports.

The source disputed claims that the show would end after season five. Apparently “Yellowstone” will continue for at least one more season after Dutton’s death. While there are rumors Matthew McConaughey will take over as the show’s lead, that’s not quite what the source believes will happen. McConaughey is going to have his own series; something like “1923,” according to the outlet’s source.

“Yellowstone” hasn’t even started filming the second half of season five yet. Even if they started filming in May, the production time to wrap up the series would be tough. Perhaps the outlet was trying to say that when “Yellowstone” resumes production in the fall, Dutton will be killed off in the opening episodes? And then we’d see new episodes in 2024?

Now, that would make sense. It would also create a vacuum within the series for a new owner of the Dutton-Yellowstone Ranch to step forward. I’m not sure I speak for everyone when I say Tate (Brecken Merrill), Monica (Kelsey Asbille), and Kayce (Luke Grimes) should be the rightful owners of the ranch. In an absolutely perfect world, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Kacye would run the ranch together, with the help of Beth’s husband, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). Therefore, the line of succession would naturally return the land to Tate, who is half Native American, and should technically own the land anyway.

But Sheridan doesn’t create perfect worlds within his fiction. He creates honest worlds that reveal the brutality of man, and the conflicting nature of our apex existence at this moment in history. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if the ranch ended up in the hands of developers, or maybe Beth really will turn the whole place into a parking lot. Whatever it is, fans need to know the fate, and we’re not-so-patiently waiting for it.
