The Department of Justice (DOJ) declined to charge former Vice President Mike Pence Thursday for classified documents found at his home, according to a DOJ letter obtained by the New York Times.

The DOJ sent Pence a letter Thursday night informing him that “no criminal charges will be sought” in connection with the department’s investigation into classified documents found at his Indiana home, per the NYT. One of Pence’s lawyers found the documents at Pence’s home in January, alerting the National Archives, CNN reported.

“The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department’s National Security Division have conducted an investigation into the potential mishandling of classified information,” the DOJ wrote to Pence’s lawyer Thursday, according to CNN. “Based on the results of that investigation, no criminal charges will be sought.”

No evidence suggested Pence knew the documents were in his home, AP News reported.

Pence is expected to announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election next week in Iowa. (RELATED: Mike Pence To Launch 2024 Presidential Campaign In Iowa Next Week)

The DOJ’s investivations into classified documents found at former President Donald Trump’s home and Biden’s non-profit are ongoing.

In November, classified documents were found at President Biden’s old think tank office at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C. Other documents were found at his Wilmington, Delaware home in January.

The FBI found 11 sets of classified documents after a raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago in August 2022. Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed special counsel Jack Smith to oversee the investigation in November.

Trump’s legal team requested a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland last week to “discuss the ongoing injustice that is being perpetrated by your Special Counsel and his prosecutors,” according to a letter sent to Garland.

Responding to the news that Pence will not be charged, the former president said he is “at least as innocent as he is.”

“That’s great, but when am I going to be fully exonerated, I’m at least as innocent as he is,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Friday. “And what about Joe Biden, who is hiding at least 1850 boxes, and some located in Chinatown, DC? When will the witch hunt against ‘TRUMP’ stop?”
