IRS Whistleblower’s Attorney Slams Washington Post For Not Correcting Hunter Biden Story

IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley’s attorney Jason Foster publicly called out the Washington Post for not responding to a request for correction in a story the paper wrote detailing claims that Hunter Biden’s attorney made about Shapley.

Foster tweeted Thursday night that the Washington Post did not respond to his request for a correction about Biden attorney Abbe Lowell’s assertion that Shapley leaked details of the Department of Justice’s Hunter Biden investigation to the paper.

The Washington Post covered Lowell’s criticism of Shapley’s testimony in a Wednesday article, but did not rebuke Lowell’s allegation that Shapley leaked information about the Hunter Biden investigation to the Washington Post in Oct. 2o22. “One thing we and the @washingtonpost know is that its source certainly wasn’t IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley. Why not admit the truth and expose Biden’s lawyers for smearing Gary?” Foster said. He speculated that FBI agents or Biden’s attorneys could have been sources for the Washington Post’s story.

On July 5, he credited the publication for adding a statement from Shapley’s legal team to the initial version of the story, but called on the paper to add further details about Shapley not being a source for the Washington Post.

“The paper knows with 100% certainty that Gary Shapley did not leak for its story but is aiding and abetting the Biden attorneys’ false narrative with its silence,” he tweeted. “It’s fundamentally unfair to Gary Shapley and grossly misleading to the public. Democracy Dies in Darkness, so the paper should let in a little sunlight and correct the record,” he added.

Lowell wrote a letter to Republican Missouri Rep. Jason Smith, Chair of the House Ways & Means Committee, on June 30 in response to Shapley’s whistleblower testimony. He accused Shapley of leaking information to the Washington Post about the Biden case and specifically cited an Oct. 6, 2022 article in the publication about the possibility of charges being brought against Hunter Biden.

The Washington Post’s sources for the article were “people familiar with the case,” despite Lowell’s assertion that “sources that could only be from law enforcement told reporters” about the case details.

Lowell’s letter appeared to contain other falsehoods about Shapley and another IRS whistleblower who spoke to the House Ways & Means Committee. He also made claims that appear to be false about an alleged text Hunter Biden sent to a Chinese business executive, the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop and Biden’s communications with business associate Tony Bobulinski.

Shapley alleged in his testimony that the Justice Department slow-walked its investigation into Biden and contradicted public testimony by Attorney General Merrick Garland. He confirmed that theFBI knew Biden’s laptop was real as early as 2019 and disclosed a threatening text message allegedly Hunter Biden sent to a Chinese business partner with Joe Biden in the room.

Hunter Biden was charged with two tax misdemeanors and a felony gun charge. He is expected to plead guilty to the charges and avoid jail time. U.S. Attorney David Weiss, the lead prosecutor in the Biden investigation, said the Biden probe is still ongoing shortly after the charges were leveled.

The Washington Post did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
