A car struck and killed a wheelchair-bound woman Sunday as she crossed a street in Brooklyn, New York.

A 73-year-old woman driving a Lexus SUV southbound on McDonald Avenue hit the 68-year-old victim as she attempted to cross around 1:30 p.m., police say, according to the New York Post. (RELATED: Dramatic Video Shows Cop Rescuing Trapped Driver As Flames Engulf Crashed Vehicle)

Video shows the disabled woman wearing a green shirt as she wheeled herself into the street, the New York Post reported. A white vehicle is shown accelerating into view, hitting the handicapped victim, according to the outlet.

After the accident, the car continued to drive, allegedly rolling on top of the victim, the outlet reported. The driver stopped in the middle of the intersection with the victim still beneath her vehicle. The wheelchair was mangled during the incident, according to the New York Post.

The victim suffered severe bodily trauma, according to police. She was transported to Maimonides Hospital where she was declared dead from her injuries.

The driver remained at the scene, police said, according to the New York Post. Authorities are treating the incident as an accident at this time.

This is not the first car crash to occur in New York. A man driving a pickup truck in Freedom, New York, got into a head-on collision with his sister’s vehicle, killing her and her two children. Investigators are still determining how the tragic accident occurred while witnesses claim they saw the truck cross into oncoming traffic.
