A 14-year-old boy was fatally stabbed Tuesday night in Detroit after winning a basketball game, leaving his grieving mother heartbroken as she recalled their final conversation.

The victim had called his mother to check in, not knowing that it would be their last conversation.

Terronda Henderson, the victim’s mother, told CBS that her son said, “Love you, Mom. Just checking in. Call you in a little bit,” and that she replied, “Alright. Love you, son.”

Wayne County Prosecutor, Kym Worthy, has filed second-degree murder charges against a 13-year-old boy from Detroit, WXYZ reported. Responding officers found the victim lying in the street with a stab wound to the neck. Despite immediate medical attention at a local hospital, the victim succumbed to his injuries. “I don’t know what is wrong with these kids these days. You win some, and you lose some, and you go home. You fight some more, another day, or go back and toughen yourself up,” Henderson told CBS. She also said that “the baby that did this was a baby, and it’s so sad his whole life is over with because he couldn’t lose at a basketball game.”

Henderson has created a GoFundMe to help pay for burial expenses for her child. “I’m asking for help to lay my 14-year-old son to rest because like any parent you are never ready or prepared to have to bury your child,” Henderson wrote on the site. “Thank you and please keep me and my family in your prayers!”
