Ahead of the 2023-2024 school year, more school districts throughout the country have decided to shift to a four-day week while the nation suffers teacher shortages and learning loss.

Several school districts within Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas will be operating on a four-day class schedule in an effort to retain and address a shortage of teachers within the education system and state. As of May 8, 850 school districts had moved to a four-day week or a later start time since 2019, a move intended to improve student’s mental health, cut spending and combat teacher shortages. “It’s weird because for the simple fact it’s cutting down kids’ learning not only that it’s costing more out of parents’ pockets for daycare after activities are gone, it will be hard to get to,” Lisa Wilridge, a Louisiana parent, told Fox 15 News about the schedule switch.

The Acadia Parish School District in Louisiana is transitioning to a four-day week model in September in an effort to address a teacher shortage, according to The Messenger. The district said the move was due to teachers feeling overwhelmed and burnt out.

At least 31% of Missouri school districts, or 161 school systems, will be on a four-day week schedule during the 2023-2024 school year, according to KY3 News, a local outlet. Laclede County R-1, a school district in Missouri that recently made the switch, said the move was made in an effort to keep teachers from leaving the profession.

“Our biggest reason for doing this is recruitment and retention of our teachers,” Luke Boyer, former Laclede County R-1 superintendent, told the outlet about the switch.

The Independence School District, the latest Missouri school district to make the transition, noticed an increase from 91 to more than 500 educator applicants following the announcement that the school system would be switching to a four-day week, KY3 News reported.

Paco illegally came to the United States to pursue his American dream from Mexico in 1991. After he and his family had settled in Marshall, he learned English for 3 years and started helping members of the local Latino community to translate for their daily lives. He was forced to admit his illegal statues when he was involved in a murder case as a translator and a witness. Paco is very well received by the people in his town because of his involvement in helping others. He also works very hard to support his own family. Many of his supporters had testified for him at his deportation hearing and tried to lobby for a law change before the next time he has to go back to court on February 13, 2007, so Paco can stay in the United States permanently. “You look at the material the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has put out, and it says that 62 percent of teachers in Missouri leave by their fifth year,” Dale Herl, Independence School District Superintendent, told the outlet. “But we consistently hear from people who we are now interviewing that the four-day work week is something that really appealed to them, and we can’t think of any other reason that’s led to that increase in applications.”

In Arkansas, the Mayflower School District switched to a four-day week in the 2022-2023 school year and since has noticed an increase in teacher retention, THV 11 News reported. Lincoln School Board in March voted to move to a four-day week for the 2023-2024 school year to increase educator retention and recruitment, according to 5 News Online.

Anna Independent School District in Texas, is switching to a four-day week for the 2023-2024 school year after raising concerns over the shortage of bus drivers and teachers without affecting the school system’s budget, according to Local Profile, a Texas-based outlet. The school day will be lengthened by 45 minutes.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, civics test scores declined in 2022 for the first time ever. Reading levels in K-12 schools fell in line with scores last seen in the 1990s in 2022, which is the largest drop in the scores on record, according to the Nation’s Report Card.

“It really is what’s best,” Jared Miller, Anna High School Principal, told CBS News. “You get that and you have a three-day weekend and our teachers are mentally prepared for Monday morning. They’re a little bit fresher and same with students.”

The Acadia Parish School District, Laclede County R-1, Independence School District, Mayflower School District, Lincoln School District and Anna Independent School District did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Readers,

Instead of sucking up to the political and corporate powers that dominate America, The Daily Caller is fighting for you — our readers. We humbly ask you to consider joining us in this fight.

Now that millions of readers are rejecting the increasingly biased and even corrupt corporate media and joining us daily, there are powerful forces lined up to stop us: the old guard of the news media hopes to marginalize us; the big corporate ad agencies want to deprive us of revenue and put us out of business; senators threaten to have our reporters arrested for asking simple questions; the big tech platforms want to limit our ability to communicate with you; and the political party establishments feel threatened by our independence.

We don't complain -- we can't stand complainers -- but we do call it how we see it. We have a fight on our hands, and it's intense. We need your help to smash through the big tech, big media and big government blockade.

We're the insurgent outsiders for a reason: our deep-dive investigations hold the powerful to account. Our original videos undermine their narratives on a daily basis. Even our insistence on having fun infuriates them -- because we won’t bend the knee to political correctness.

One reason we stand apart is because we are not afraid to say we love America. We love her with every fiber of our being, and we think she's worth saving from today’s craziness.

Help us save her.

A second reason we stand out is the sheer number of honest responsible reporters we have helped train. We have trained so many solid reporters that they now hold prominent positions at publications across the political spectrum. Hear a rare reasonable voice at a place like CNN? There’s a good chance they were trained at Daily Caller. Same goes for the numerous Daily Caller alumni dominating the news coverage at outlets such as Fox News, Newsmax, Daily Wire and many others.

Simply put, America needs solid reporters fighting to tell the truth or we will never have honest elections or a fair system. We are working tirelessly to make that happen and we are making a difference.

Since 2010, The Daily Caller has grown immensely. We're in the halls of Congress. We're in the Oval Office. And we're in up to 20 million homes every single month. That's 20 million Americans like you who are impossible to ignore.

We can overcome the forces lined up against all of us. This is an important mission but we can’t do it unless you — the everyday Americans forgotten by the establishment — have our back.

Please consider becoming a Daily Caller Patriot today, and help us keep doing work that holds politicians, corporations and other leaders accountable. Help us thumb our noses at political correctness. Help us train a new generation of news reporters who will actually tell the truth. And help us remind Americans everywhere that there are millions of us who remain clear-eyed about our country's greatness.

In return for membership, Daily Caller Patriots will be able to read The Daily Caller without any of the ads that we have long used to support our mission. We know the ads drive you crazy. They drive us crazy too. But we need revenue to keep the fight going. If you join us, we will cut out the ads for you and put every Lincoln-headed cent we earn into amplifying our voice, training even more solid reporters, and giving you the ad-free experience and lightning fast website you deserve.

Patriots will also be eligible for Patriots Only content, newsletters, chats and live events with our reporters and editors. It's simple: welcome us into your lives, and we'll welcome you into ours.

We can save America together.

Become a Daily Caller Patriot today.
