“Barbie” is poised to overtake “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” as the highest grossing global release in Warner Bros. history.
“Barbie’s” weekend earnings topped $18.2 million, generated from 12,852 screens in a total of 75 international territories, according to a Variety report published Sunday. The movie, which debuted in theaters July 21, has grossed an impressive $1.34 billion worldwide as of Sunday morning and is showing no signs of slowing down.
“Barbie” is likely to surpass “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and if that should happen, the film will rank as the top film of the year at the global box office, according to Variety.
“Barbie” stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp and Dua Lipa, and is a Greta Gerwig-directed film. The movie takes audiences on a journey through Ken and Barbie’s blissful existence in Barbie Land and compares it to the struggles they face when they enter the real world to attempt to live among humans. Barbie sets out on a mission to better understand herself and her true purpose and is faced with adversity along the way. The other movie dominating the charts is Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” starring Cillian Murphy, which has approached the $800-million mark at the worldwide box office after earning $29.1 million from 7,555 screens. The film has been released in 82 territories and has grossed $777 million worldwide. The film will soon debut in China, which is expected to spike the numbers even higher, according to Variety.
