A Manhattan man who plunged into the North Pool at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum Monday afternoon survived the fall.
The 33-year-old suspect, who suffered a leg injury, is expected to face criminal charges after jumping into the reflecting pool, according to the New York Post.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) arrived at the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan around 1:30 p.m. to address the scene, the outlet reported. A Port Authority cop who witnessed the man’s alleged suicide attempt tried to climb down and grab him, police and law enforcement sources said.
A video posted on X shows the man face-down in 18-inch-deep water in the pool’s central basin. He eventually dropped head-first 20 feet into the lower part of the pool to the horror of bystanders, footage obtained by the outlet revealed.
The man was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, where he received treatment for his left leg injury, according to the outlet. (RELATED: Massive Crane Catches Fire, Collapses In NYC)
The identity and motive of the man remain unknown.
A man was reportedly “split in half” in August after jumping 750 feet from the five-star luxury Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Columbus Circle. Another man died after allegedly falling from a Manhattan condo building onto an adjacent roof, where he plummeted.
