The trailer for “Occupied City” dropped Tuesday, and it is one of the scariest trailers you’ll see all year given our current, rapid descent into World War III.

“In May, 1940, Amsterdam was taken over by the Germans,” a British narrator describes over footage of the modern day city. “Immediately, they set the clock forward, so it was the same time in Amsterdam as in Berlin. The weather report disappeared from the newspapers. It was now a military secret. All street lights were turned off.”

From director Steve McQueen, even these opening 25 seconds of the “Occupied City” trailer should be enough to send a shiver down your spine. None of what was just described is fiction. McQueen has taken the underlying story from “Atlas Of An Occupied City” by Bianca Stigter, and shown us what it was like in the first days of the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands during WWII. And just how quick and easy it was for this despicable group of genocidal maniacs to steal the freedom of almost an entire continent.

“Dutch organizations were Nazi-fied or forbidden. Soon, the Nazis started to ban Jews from parks, pools, shops, cafes, and schools, from all public life. Music by Jewish composers could no longer be played,” the narrator continues. “In 1941, they started rounding people up. In 1942, the deportations began.”

Given the current fear of WWIII breaking out thanks to the Hamas massacre of Jews and Israelis, as well as the Palestinian people living in Gaza, McQueen’s film couldn’t come at a better time. There is no official release date for the movie, but I’ll be going to see it as soon as I can, that’s for damn sure.

The easiest way to repeat the mistakes of our past is to forget or ignore our history altogether.
