The American dream is dead, the Wall Street Journal reported in their obituaries — sorry — news vertical Friday.

Apparently only 36 percent of respondents to a WSJ/NORC Survey said the American Dream holds true, the outlet reported the day after Thanksgiving (amazing timing guys, truly). Life is worse now  than it was 50 years ago, more than half of the respondents told pollsters, and most think the economic and political systems are “stacked against people like me.” And they’re totally correct!

“We have a nice house in the suburbs, and we have a two-car garage,” Graham, 30, told the WSJ. “But I’d be lying if I didn’t say that money was tight.” Graham is a stay-at-home dad who says he and his neighbors are “all a couple of paychecks away from being on the street.”

Well, Graham, perhaps you should get a freaking job then, buddy? You have children, so you kind of have a responsibility to avoid homelessness. And getting a job is literally the first step to avoiding financial ruin.

But for some, it might not be enough. Countless Americans splurged their savings during the pandemic and months following, buying massively overpriced homes with outrageous mortgages that would not only guarantee a lifetime of debt, but will likely cause a financial collapse staggeringly larger than 2008. People like Graham don’t remember what 2008 was like for those of us with jobs and assets. It was awful. We believed the dream was dead then, but we made it back … nly to put ourselves in a much worse situation less than two decades later.

Depending on any type of authority to fix these myriad problems is pointless. If you’re like Graham and his family, sort your assets, work, and finances out before the holidays. Sell anything you don’t need, and stock up on nonperishable foods. If you think what you’re currently experiencing is the death of the American Dream, you’re going to think what happens next is the freaking apocalypse.
