The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of another major winter storm Tuesday that could cause damage across a number of states.

The probability of a major winter storm hitting the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest grew on Tuesday, with the NWS tracking the potential for heavy snow, freezing rain and significant wind gusts to hit as soon as Saturday and last through until the following Tuesday. Hazardous travel and impacts to infrastructure are forecast, along with uncertainty over how high accumulations of snow could be in areas like Montana.

“Greater chances for moderate to heavy snow shifts to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes by Friday, where there is the potential for up to 10-12 inches of snow. Residents should remain weather aware and up to date with the latest forecast as uncertainty remains regarding the exact location of heavy snowbands,” the NWS said in their full forecast.

The separate but also rapidly developing low pressure system was spotted over Maine as of Wednesday morning. There’s a high probability the system will bring a much as four inches of snow to the Northeast and New England, the NWS noted in its forecast, shutting down any hopes of spring finally awakening for 2024. Unsettled weather is also anticipated across the Southern Plains, Gulf and West Coast, sparking showers and storms in parts of Oklahoma and Texas. Further west, “Bryce Canyon National Park welcomed spring with snowy trails” in recent days, according to AccuWeather.

As snow is set to return to many northern towns and cities, it’s essential that you check the forecast before leaving your home. Though spring technically started on Tuesday, it isn’t actually here — well, the warm weather isn’t, but the darned pollen is.
