Creepy footage shared on social media Sunday showed a horrific swarm of dragonflies descending upon a popular Rhode Island beach.
The dragonflies made landfall on Saturday at Misquamicut State Beach in Rhode Island, according to WCVB-TV. Holiday makers and locals can clearly be heard screaming, laughing and reacting the the event, which looks like something of a Biblical plague.
In the background of the footage shared on social media, one man, possibly Richard Sontag, can be heard saying “My God! My God! What the heck?” before chuckling to himself at the insane scene. The woman who appears to be filming one of the clips, Stephanie Martin, squeals, “this is serious!”

“I was enjoying a nice day at Misquamicut State Beach until we endured a dragonfly apocalypse,” Martin told WCVB-TV. (RELATED: Popular Tourist Beach Forced To Close After Enormous Crocodile Was Spotted ‘Lurking’ In The Water)
The creepy crawlies are apparently the Common Green Darner dragonfly, which reproduce during July and August in the Rhode Island region, according to the National Science Foundation. Apparently, these swarms can get so huge during the mating season that they’re picked up on radar systems, which is a disgusting thought, thanks WBUR.
The good news is dragonflies like to eat mosquitoes and other flies, so this is an excellent form of pest and disease control. And they pose no physical danger to humans, just emotional.
