A marine died Sunday from injuries sustained by an accident at a Twentynine Palms training center in California, the MAGTF Training Command/Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at 29 Palms writes in a press release.
The marine sustained injuries during “a vehicle rollover with a high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle” Saturday and was rushed to a hospital at the military installation, the combat center writes in a Facebook post. The man was then sent to another hospital “where medical authorities pronounced the Marine deceased,” the press release reads. The deceased was the only soldier injured during the training incident.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the Marine during this difficult time,” the combat center writes. The service added that the identity of the deceased would remain private information for 24 hours following the notification of “all next-of-kin.”
The military center maintained that an investigation was underway to determine what caused “the rollover.” The vehicle that rolled over was a Humvee, Star and Stripes, a military publication, reported. Rollovers are among the top causes for fatalities in the military, according to Military.com.
The army and Marine Corps introduced practices to reduce the risks of vehicular rollover back in 2021 but units did not always employ these practices, Military.com reported, citing a government watchdog report. Insufficient training and oversight were also cited as contributors to the high rate of accidents, the watchdog reportedly added.
A spokesperson for the marines informed the Daily Caller that there were “[n]o updates as of now.”
