My first thought when I saw this story was, “Wait, doesn’t he have one already?” But I was thinking of that other earthly vessel of holiness: @BarackObama.

It’s official. Pope Benedict’s handle on Twitter will be @pontifex.
He already has 1.2 billion “followers” in the standard sense of the word but next week he will have another type when he enters what for any 85-year old is the brave new world of Twitter.
The Vatican said on Monday that the pope will start tweeting on December 12, the feast of the Madonna of Guadalupe.
“The handle is a good one. It means ‘pope’ and it also means ‘bridge builder’,” said Greg Burke, senior media advisor to the Vatican.
Plus, @ThePope is already taken.
He hasn’t tweeted anything yet, but people are already using it as an excuse to be a jerk to him:

Religion is stupid and you can say whatever you want about it, as long as it’s not Islam.

Reuters reports the Pope is entering the world of Twitter at “Pontifex.” On Monday morning’s Bill Press show, the former seminarian mocked the 85-year-old pontiff: “What do you think the chances are that the Pope has any idea how to access Twitter?” By the way, hip Bill Press is 72.
But remember: Glenn Beck is the bad guy for mocking “Piss Christ.” That’s the real blasphemy.
