After nearly three weeks of hand-wringing, MSNBC finally swung the axe on Martin Bashir for his suggestion that someone should “s-h-i-t” in Sarah Palin’s mouth.
“After making an on-air apology, I asked for permission to take some additional time out around the Thanksgiving holiday,” Bashir wrote in a Wednesday email to Mediaite. “Upon further reflection, and after meeting with the president of MSNBC, I have tendered my resignation.”
“I deeply regret what was said,” he continued, “[and] will endeavor to work hard at making constructive contributions in the future and will always have a deep appreciation for our viewers — who are the smartest, most compassionate and discerning of all television audiences.”
Bashir was forced to apologize for a Nov. 15 segment mocking Sarah Palin for comparing the national debt to slavery. He read out descriptions of punishments meted out to slaves in the Caribbean, which including defecating in the mouths of those who misbehaved. “If anyone truly qualified for a dose of discipline [like that], then she would be the outstanding candidate,” he said.
MSNBC has been cleaning house of late, firing Alec Baldwin just last week after he hurled a gay slur at a photographer while off the air. Phil Griffin, president of the network, released a brief statement a few minutes after Bashir on Wednesday. “Martin Bashir resigned today, effective immediately,” he wrote. “I understand his decision and I thank him for three great years with MSNBC. Martin is a good man and respected colleague — we wish him only the best.”
