Even amid the revelation by The Washington Post that the show had sought counseling to determine what’s wrong with NBC “MTP” host David Gregory, execs still backed him. NBC News Prez Deborah Turness has publicly and staunchly supported Gregory, saying he was their guy.

But Wednesday New York Post‘s Page Six’s head honcho, Emily Smith, is reporting that Gregory’s time is almost up, and that he may be replaced as soon as after the November midterm elections.

They’ve even got an NBC source (anonymous yes, but it’s not like the execs are going to dish the truth) saying it could be sooner. The most likely replacement: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd. In 2008, Todd was the fan favorite to replace then-host Tim Russert, who suddenly died. Will he finally get the job everyone said should be rightfully his?

NBC is, of course, denying all of it.

The Mirror sought comment from Todd asking if he’s finally ready to step up to the plate.
