An African-American English teacher has been suspended by the Duncanville, Texas school district without pay and will likely be fired because of a racist tweet she sent out Friday night.

“Who the fuck made you dumb duck ass crackers think I give a squat fuck about your opinions about my opinions RE: #Ferguson? Kill yourselves,” tweeted Vinita Hegwood under the Twitter handle @duckseason6.

The tweet is an apparent reference to the Ferguson, Mo., police shooting in which a white police officer shot an 18-year-old black man.

It is unclear what about the case set off Hegwood.

Hegwood, a second-year teacher, also operated another Twitter account under the handle @_southerngirl70.

After meeting with Hegwood Monday morning, Duncanville school district officials issued a statement saying that she would be suspended without pay.

“As an individual, Ms. Vinita Hegwood expressed an opinion on social media that is solely her own. She used her personal social media to make remarks that are offensive. While everyone has the right to free speech, as a teacher in the district, we believe the comments that are alleged to be made by Ms. Hegwood are absolutely reprehensible and we do not condone it,” reads a statement on the school districts website.

In a press conference held Monday morning, a Duncanville school district spokeswoman said that the school district had received more than two dozen phone calls from angry parents as of Monday morning.

The spokeswoman also said that Hegwood’s firing is “pretty much a certain outcome.”
