Senators often get revealing only after they leave Congress.

Former Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) recently did something probable presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton never would. She took to the kitchen on the Hallmark’s “Home & Family” show with host Cristina Ferrare to prepare Chicken Tetrazzini. The meal was intended for caregivers of veterans, to give them ideas on what to cook for the wounded soldiers. The casserole can be frozen for up to four months.

“I can cook, but I am not a chef by any means,” said Dole, who was apparently very nervous for this segment. “I just want to make that very clear.”

To be clear, the recipe was not Dole’s and she refused to help with the cooking. Not meanly, but she was fine to let Ferrare handle the prep work.

Asked what she eats as a late-night snack, she replied, “Ice cream. My husband and I are both big ice cream lovers.”

But the most interesting thing to emerge from the interview?

It’s that her husband Bob Dole hates mushrooms and vegetables in general.

“My husband absolutely does not eat mushrooms,” she said, when the host dumped a bunch of Shitakes in the bowl.

At the end of the interview, lots of “God bless you’s” all around.
