An elementary school lunch lady was fired from her job at an Aurora, Colo. school Friday for giving school lunches to students who didn’t have any money.
Della Curry used to be the kitchen manager at Dakota Valley Elementary School, where feeding hungry children was part of her job description. But now she is looking for work because The Cherry Creek School District fired her after officials learned about her misdeeds, The Denver Post reported.
Curry told the newspaper she gave away around 20 lunches over the past year to kids who didn’t qualify for the school’s free lunch program, but whose accounts were in the negative. She admitted to violating the school’s policy, but said she would like to see it changed.
“I knew the whole time it was a firing offense,” she told the Post. “Somebody told my supervisors what I had done, and it is immediate termination. I will take that if we can change the rules.”
According to CBS News, a family of four would need to have a household income below $31,000 to qualify for the free lunch program. Students who don’t qualify for the program, but who don’t have money for lunch, get a single slice of cheese on a hamburger bun and a small milk.
Curry didn’t think that was right.
“I had a first grader in front of me, crying, because she doesn’t have enough money for lunch. Yes, I gave her lunch,” she said.
Curry said she is looking forward to speaking with the school board in the future about making changes to its school lunch policy.
