As his poll numbers continue to climb, the ghosts of Bernie Sanders’s past have started to crop up. And just like some of his political philosophies, some nuggets from his past are certainly interesting.
Buried in the 19th paragraph of a New York Times article exploring Sanders’ early political life, the self-described socialist once argued that cervical cancer was caused by women not experiencing a sufficient amounts of orgasms.
“Mr. Sanders contributed only sporadically,” Sarah Lyall writes for The Times “[H]e wrote some articles about health, including one in which he cited studies claiming that cancer could be caused by psychological factors such as unresolved hostility toward one’s mother, a tendency to bury aggression beneath a ‘facade of pleasantness’ and having too few orgasms.”
“‘Sexual adjustment seemed to be very poor in those with cancer of the cervix,’ he wrote, quoting a study in a journal called Psychosomatic Medicine,” says The Times.
The latest bit comes on the heels of Sanders’ 1972 essay on women fantasizing about rape being unearthed in May, which the Vermont senator said was “something like ’50 Shades of Grey.'” (RELATED: Bernie Sanders On Rape Essay: It Was ‘Something Like 50 Shades Of Grey’)
