Two terrorists claiming ISIS affiliation killed a priest and seriously injured another person early Tuesday morning during Mass in northern France, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The attackers were armed with knives and took five hostages, including a priest, in the town of Saint Etienne du Rouvray. French authorities found the priest, 84-year-old Jacques Hamel, dead on arrival with a slit throat. Another person was left “between life and death,” a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry told the Wall Street Journal.

The attackers were gunned down by French police as they exited the church.

This is just one in a series of terrorist attacks on western Europe. France saw a radical Islamic terrorist drive a truck through a large crowd killing 84 people earlier in July. Another Islamic radical injured people in an attack with an ax in Germany, and this egregious rampage was followed by another shooting in Munich.

French President François Hollande has said the attackers have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, reports the Wall Street Journal. The French government has additionally strengthened its security measures over the last months to combat attacks
