Officials at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) said roughly 230 flights going to and from the transportation hub have been canceled or delayed over the past few days, with 400 more flights expected to be called off or pushed back Friday.
The massive transit disaster mainly stems from two storms that hit the state recently, as well as snow and rain around the country, reports the Los Angeles Times. Delays at other U.S. airports caused a domino effect for air travelers, seemingly hitting LAX the hardest. (RELATED: Startup Wants To Get People Compensation For Delayed, Cancelled Flights)
“The airport is at capacity,” airport spokeswoman Mary Grady said, referencing the fact that the airport is brimming with holiday travelers.
Authorities at LAX were forced to change flight operations by directing planes to fly over urban areas to the east rather than the usual procedure of flying west toward the ocean. Grady said this “slows things down,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

Grady said such incidents start backing up the whole process, which triggers further delays.
Another airport representative, Katherine Alvarado, said that officials anticipate approximately 400 more flights in and out of LAX to be postponed or canceled altogether early Friday.
