Sen. Ted Cruz hammered James Gunn on Saturday for the “truly evil” uncovered tweets about rape and pedophilia that eventually got the director fired from his role at Disney.

The Texas senator also called for Gunn’s prosecution if the “tweets are true.”

“Wow,” Cruz tweeted Saturday. “These James Gunn tweets are just horrible. Child rape is no laughing matter. As Texas [Solicitor General], I handled far too many child sexual assaults. Truly evil. I’m glad Disney fired him, but if these tweets are true, he needs to be prosecuted.”

Cruz’s post contained images of the tweets that had been posted Thursday evening by activist Jack Prosobiec and reported on Friday by the Daily Caller News Foundation’s Molly Prince and Joe Simonson. It didn’t take long before the exposure of the offensive tweets resulted in Gunn’s dismissal from Disney.

“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him,” read a statement from Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Gunn has since apologized, explaining the tweets as being from a time when he saw himself as a “provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo.”
