Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores isn’t ready to name a starting quarterback just yet.

Josh Rosen and Ryan Fitzpatrick are in a massive battle right now for the starting job, and it had seemed like the veteran journeyman was going to win the job. Assumptions about Fitz getting the starting nod might have been premature.

“This could go either way…I think they’re both working hard, both have leadership, both have done a lot of good things. This will be a hard decision for the staff,” Flores said when talking about the quarterback competition, according to the Miami Herald on Sunday. I’ll be a little surprised if the Dolphins don’t give Fitzpatrick the first crack at starting. He’s seemed to be ahead of Rosen through camp, and I can’t imagine the former Cardinals passer has done enough to close the gap.

Who do I think ultimately has the higher ceiling? Rosen without a doubt. No question about it at all. However, that doesn’t mean the former UCLA sensation has to start right now.

He’s only entering his second year in the league.

Fitzpatrick isn’t going to lead you to the promise land, but he’ll be good enough to win some games. We’ve seen him do it just about everywhere he’s gone.

He’s not a star by any metric or measurement, but he’ll do enough to put up some points. Rosen could probably do the same, but he’s a lot less proven.

Right now, I fully expect Fitzpatrick to open up as the starter and for Rosen to get his chance down the road. The only scenario where Rosen starts immediately is if the Dolphins want to know immediately if he’s the franchise guy they’re hoping for.

If not, then they can tank for Tua. Otherwise, I think we’ll see Fitz under center.
