President Donald Trump said Thursday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will release reopening guidance for churches and other houses of worship in the very near future.
“I just got off the phone with CDC, and I talked about churches,” the president told reporters gathered for a roundtable speaking event with African American leaders in Michigan. “I said, ‘I want the churches to open and the people want the churches to open,’ and I think you’ll have something come down very soon from CDC. “To me, they use the essential, I think churches are essential,” he continued. “They want to have it opened, and I think that’s going to be happening shortly.”
“That will be put out maybe tomorrow, maybe today.”
During the event, Trump credited Pastor Darrell Scott, co-chair of the “Black Voices for Trump” 2020 reelection coalition, with pushing him to reopen churches. Scott told the Daily Caller in May to expect the government to provide special guidance on reopening churches as states rolled into phased reopening plans.
