“It’s been very odd to tell you the truth, this idea of identifying as something. I think people identify me as something, but I identify as a human being. And, my dad is black,” McDaniel told the media Wednesday while discussing his thoughts on race.

“I’ve just tried to be a good person. I think my background opens my eyes a little bit. I don’t have any real experience with racism because I think you identify me as something close…I don’t know,” McDaniel further added. He also said his parents, did experience issues as an interracial couple. You can listen to his full comments below.

Good for McDaniel for his approach to race and props to him for making these comments. A lot of people have been talking about the fact he’s bi-racial ever since the Dolphins hired him.

Lots of people are using his race to try to make points for their respective sides. Clearly, McDaniel doesn’t view it as a huge deal.

He identifies as a human being with a black father and an interesting life story. Believe it or not, you don’t have to make it more complicated than that.

I know that might sound crazy to the race hustlers out there but it’s true. Who you are as a person and how you treat those around you matters a hell of a lot more than your race.

In fact, I’d argue how you are as a person is really the only thing that matters. If you’re a good person, people will want to be around you. If you’re a garbage person, they won’t. Race shouldn’t have anything to do with it.

We could use some more honesty and straightforwardness like McDaniel’s mindset in America.
