A number of conservatives mocked CNN on Twitter early Wednesday for suggesting inflation, which slightly decreased to 8.5%, is worth breathing a sigh of relief over.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) did not change from June to July, according to data released Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Inflation remains at 8.5% and the food index increased 1.1% in July, the seventh consecutive monthly increase of 0.9% or more, according to the BLS.

CNN tweeted inflation “took a breather in July, thanks to the falling cost of food and gas, as consumer prices grew at a slower pace than in previous months.”

Communications Director for the Republican Governors Association, Jesse Hunt, said nobody would actually be breathing a sigh of relief. (RELATED: ‘You Can’t Hide The Facts’: Majority Of Americans Think US Is In A Recession, Poll Shows)

Townhall columnist Derek Hunter said CNN was “cool” with the “lie” that inflation was only high because of gas prices.

Senior producer at GOP Lindsay Wigo tweeted a meme of SpongeBob breathing heavily to mock CNN.

Communications at the Heritage Foundation John Cooper said CNN “wants you to think a 38% increase in the cost of eggs, 15% for milk, 22% for flour, 20% for health insurance, and 27% for plane tickets is inflation ‘taking a breather.'”

Republican Ohio Rep. Bob Gibbs asked “how bad do things have to be for the media to celebrate EIGHT POINT FIVE PERCENT inflation as a good thing?”
