Authorities arrested a California man Thursday for murder after he allegedly cut a woman’s head off with a sword, according to a report.

San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office deputies found the woman’s body around 11:50 a.m. in San Carlos after an individual witnessed an assault and called police, according to NBC Bay Area. The authorities found the woman dead when they arrived, according to the report.

The suspect, later identified as Jose Landaeta Solano, fled the scene but later returned and was arrested in connection with the death, according to the report.

San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Eamonn Allen said Thursday a “stabbing instrument” was used but did not provide additional details, according to NBC Bay Area. The outlet reported a sword was being sought.

“Anytime someone loses their life, it’s certainly a tragedy,” Allen reportedly said. “As far as the shocking nature of it, I do know that the deputies that first arrived on scene were a little beset by the scene. We are providing them peer support. We are also providing support for witnesses that were on scene as well because there were several civilian witnesses.”

Allen said Solano had a history of mental illness and a violent criminal past.

“When our deputies responded to the scene and started to process the scene, it’s my understanding that he was contacted in the area, but he was not in the immediate scene.”

Chapele Thorborne, who lives in the neighborhood, told the outlet that Solano and the unidentified victim moved into the area about three years ago.

“They seemed like they loved each other.”

The victim reportedly had two children, a one-year-old and a seven-year-old. The victim reportedly had a restraining order against Solano.
