A California university said it will stop sending student teachers to a school district that banned the teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT), according to a statement from the school district.
California State University Fullerton will not be placing new student teachers at Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District in Sacramento, California, because they believe the school district cannot best train the education students who are trained in social justice, tenets of CRT and gender theories, according to an Oct. 17 statement by the school district. The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School Board approved a resolution in April that prohibits teaching CRT, or the teaching that one race is superior to another.
“The placement of student teachers in Placentia Yorba Linda Unified School District, at this time, would place us in conflict with our goals to prepare teacher candidates with pedagogical approaches rooted in diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, race and gender theories, cultural linguistic studies, social emotional well-being and tenets of Critical Race Theory,” the college told the school district.
The university is planning to work with the district to create a “just, equitable and inclusive education” so that they may resume placing student teachers at the school, the statement read. The university said it values “freedom of thought and expression” and wishes to see the provide an education that does the same. The university asked the school how they were providing a “just, equitable and inclusive education” following the school board’s ban on CRT, the statement by the school district said. Despite the school district’s statement regarding their focus on equity, equality and diversity, the university paused the placement of student teachers.
“While we respect the university’s right to make this determination, we are disappointed by their decision to pause the placement of new student teachers in our district,” the school district wrote in a statement. “We value our partnership with Cal State Fullerton University, and we look forward to continuing the discussion about renewing their placement of student teachers in Placentia Yorba Linda Unified School District, and about our continued commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and culturally relevant and inclusive teaching practices.”
The California State Fullerton University and Placentia Yorba Linda Unified School District did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.
