Two children are dead and a third has been airlifted to the hospital after police were called to an alleged suicide attempt in Massachusetts on Tuesday night.

Duxbury police found the children — a five-year-old girl and two boys aged three years and eight months, respectively — receiving a call about an alleged suicide attempt by a woman purported to be the victims’ mother. The children were all unconscious and and showed “obvious signs of trauma,” Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz told reporters, per MassLive.

First responders took the girl and the older boy to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead, Cruz said. The infant was airlifted to a Boston hospital where he remains in treatment, the outlet reported.

The woman was also taken to the hospital for treatment after allegedly attempting to commit suicide by jumping out of a window of the home, Cruz stated according to WCJB News.

“This is an unimaginable, senseless tragedy,” Cruz told the outlet. “This is not something that happened randomly.”

The five members of the household all appear to be related, though investigators are still trying to piece together the details, Cruz said. “As I’ve often said at these terrible events, this is a slow and steady process,” he added, according to MassLive. “We’re not here to do it quick. We’re here to do it right.” (RELATED: Two Children Found Stabbed To Death And Hidden In Bathtub In NYC Homeless Shelter. Police Arrest Mother)

Democratic Massachusetts State Rep. Josh Cutler, who represents Duxbury, expressed his sorrow on social media Wednesday morning. “It’s hard to find the right words for the unimaginable tragedy in Duxbury last night. Our hearts break at the loss of these innocent children. There is lots of love and support in our community and every bit of it will be needed for this family,” he wrote. “While we await more details, we also send our thoughts to all the dedicated police, fire and EMS professionals who responded to what must have been a very traumatic scene.”

Duxbury Police Chief Michael A. Carbone announced that the incident was isolated and assured reporters that there was no further threat to the community, the outlet reported.
