A journalist’s complaint about Twitter “community notes” fact-checking a tweet from gun control activist David Hogg was itself fact-checked on the platform Tuesday.
Judd Legum has made something of a career out of advocating through his reporting for censorship of certain brands and organizations he dislikes. Legum has called out various companies, including Coca-Cola and Delta, for not opposing a Georgia bill requiring ID to get an absentee ballot quickly or staunchly enough. Legum’s platform ThinkProgress also at one point began keeping a list of companies they alleged had links to the N.R.A., reporting that the N.R.A.’s official credit card was rescinded following their list.
“.@davidhogg111 has the right to express his opinion about the second amendment without @CommunityNotes attaching commentary,” Legum wrote, adding a screenshot of the Tweet from Hogg. “You have no right to a gun. You are not a militia,” Hogg wrote in the tweet. “When you’re talking about your second amendment rights you’re talking about a states right to have what is today the national guard. The modern interpretation of 2A is a ridiculous fraud pushed for decades by the gun lobby.”
A community note, Elon Musk’s new way of fact-checking on Twitter, was added to Hogg’s tweet, noting that the Supreme Court has recognized a right to bear arms with certain limitations.

Even a research fellow at the left-wing Anti-Defamation League, who is a self-described “expert on right-wing extremism,” disagreed with Legum’s contention that Hogg was being unfairly censored.
“His tweet did not mention the Supreme Court, he just made assertions,” Mark Pitcavage wrote. “I don’t have a problem with the note. I should note that, as someone who wrote an 820-page dissertation on the history of the militia, I too believe that SCOTUS decision was made very much in error.”
