The New York City Democratic Socialists (NYC DSA) backtracked Tuesday following condemnation from fellow Democratic Socialists and Democrats after a rally Sunday held after brutal terrorist attacks in Israel that killed hundreds of unarmed men, women and children.

NYC DSA held a rally in Times Square alongside many pro-Palestine groups following widespread terrorist attacks in Israel by Hamas that killed over 1,000 people and resulted in the kidnapping of dozens of Israelis. NYC DSA released a press statement saying they are sorry for their “promotion” of the rally and understand many are “shocked” by the rally. “On Saturday, in anticipation of escalatory violence to come, we tweeted a promotion of a rally in solidarity with the people of Palestine. We understand why many, including our allies, were shocked by the timing and the tone of this message in a moment of profound fear and grief. We are sorry for the confusion our post caused and for not making our values explicit,” their press statement reads.

“We are also concerned that some have chosen to focus on a rally while ignoring the root causes of violence in the region, the far-right Netanyahu government’s escalating human rights violations and explicitly genocidal rhetoric, and the dehumanization of the Palestinian people,” the press release continues.

Rally-goers at the NYC DSA-organized rally waved Palestinian flags and burned an Israeli flag in Times Square one day after Hamas terrorists launched widespread attacks on Israel, according to the New York Post.

Democratic New York Reps. Jamaal Bowman and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who identify as Democratic Socialists, put out public statements condemning the New York City Democratic Socialist rally. Other New York Democratic officials condemned the rally as well, such as Gov. Kathy Hochul, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

NYC DSA did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
