Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff has reportedly been living in Maryland for two decades, documents that surfaced Wednesday showed.
Mortgage records revealed Schiff claimed his 3,420 square foot property in Maryland as his primary residence, according to CNN. The congressman also reportedly claimed his 650 square foot condo in Burbank, California, as his primary residence to reduce his $7,000 tax bill.

Schiff did not take an exemption on his Maryland home, the outlet reported. However, he reportedly signed documents stating both his Maryland and California properties were primary residences.
A spokesperson for Schiff, Marisol Samayoa, claims the congressman’s primary residence is in California.
“Adam’s primary residence is Burbank, California, and will remain so when he wins the Senate seat,” Samayoa told CNN. “As Adam has discussed openly many times over the years, including in his recent New York Times best-selling book, he and Eve made the difficult decision to move their family to the D.C. area to spend more time with his children while doing his job.”
Schiff paid his California property taxes in 2017 with a check containing his Maryland address, according to the outlet. 2017 was reportedly the only year the congressman used a personal check to make the payment.
Along with public records and past comments, pictures previously shared on his public social media indicate Schiff’s main residence is at his Maryland property, CNN noted. The Maryland home was reportedly listed as Schiff’s primary residence in 2003 and from 2009 to 2012 after the congressman refinanced his mortgage, according to deed records. Additionally, Los Angeles County deed records for Schiff’s California condo were notarized in Maryland, according to CNN. Maryland and Montgomery County were written in on the document and California and Los Angeles County were reportedly crossed out.
Schiff announced his bid for a California U.S. Senate seat in January. Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein died at the age of 90 in September, prompting California Gov. Gavin Newsom to appoint Laphonza Butler as her replacement.
