Jamie Spears, Britney Spears’ father, reportedly had his leg amputated after suffering from a serious infection.

“He had a knee replacement and got a terrible infection from it,” a source close to the situation told Page Six in a report Tuesday. Another source with direct knowledge of the situation said Jamie underwent 5 unsuccessful surgeries to contain the infection in one of his legs, but those efforts were unsuccessful. Doctors soon realized his leg had to be amputated in an effort to save his life, and he underwent the amputation process roughly a month ago, according to TMZ.

Jamie reportedly spent several weeks in a hospital in the Kentwood, Los Angeles area, when he was battling the internal infection. Jamie and his doctors had hoped the amputation could be avoided, and they tried everything possible to assist him before opting for “the last resort,” according to Page Six.

Those close to the situation report he is currently not doing very well, according to Page Six. Jamie has been battling a number of health issues in recent months, and has been staying out of the public eye as much as possible.

News of the amputations comes two months after it was reported that the 71-year-old had “lost more than 25 pounds,” after being “seriously ill,” according to Page Six.

Jamie went back and forth between hospitals and a facility for infectious disease patients during that time.

It remains unclear if Britney Spears will see this as an opportunity to bond and reconnect with her father, or if the two will remain estranged.(RELATED: ‘A Lot That People Don’t Know’: Britney Spears Gives Peek Into Conservatorship In Memoir Teaser)
