A man was reportedly sentenced Monday for a drunk driving crash that killed a married couple in Long Island, New York, leaving the victims’ two daughters without parents.

Ismenia and Odalis Urena were killed in August 2023 when Sotirios Spanos drifted into their lane and collided with them head on. Spanos pled guilty April 23 to aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter, assault and driving while intoxicated (DWI), according to CBS News.

The two young orphaned daughters, 15 and 9, spoke in court at Spanos’s sentencing, asking the judge for the maximum penalty, CBS News reported June 17.

“You have made my life miserable,” the 15-year-old said. “You should be ashamed of your actions.”

“Losing my parents has changed my whole entire life,” the 9-year-old said.

At the time of the incident, Ismenia Urena had recently become a published author and her husband, Odalis Urena, was a builder who donated homes around the world, according to CBS News.

Spanos’s blood alcohol level was reportedly twice the legal limit and prosecutors said the crash occurred after an argument he had while on a date. His attorneys said he has a history with alcoholism and addiction and that he feels incredibly remorseful. “I accept full responsibility. I never intended this epitome of stupidity and irresponsibility. There is no punishment too great,” Spanos said during a lengthy apology, CBS News reported.

Judge Howard Sturim sentenced Spanos to 7-21 years in prison, according to CBS News.
