Tempo Music Investments is suing Miley Cyrus for copyright infringement over her hit song, “Flowers.”
The lawsuit alleges Cyrus copied the song “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars, to which they claim to own a share of the copyright, according to TMZ. Tempo Music Investments reportedly alleges that “Flowers'” harmony, melody and chorus share significant commonalities with those in Mars’ song. They claim “Flowers” has the same chord progressions and that some of its lyrics matches those of Mars’, the outlet reported.
The newly filed court documents claim the number of similarities come from Miley “intentionally copying” Mars’ hit single, according to TMZ.
Tempo Music Investments reportedly argues that Mars released his song a full decade before Cyrus’, and notes that she won an Grammy Award in 2024 for the hit song. “When I Was Your Man” reached the top of the charts well before Cyrus’ song was released .
The legal documents said “it is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that ‘Flowers’ would not exist without ‘When I Was Your Man,'” according to TMZ.
Tempo Music reportedly says Mars’ hit was available to Miley, as well as the singer’s producer team and her label.
They want a ruling to block her from performing or selling “Flowers,” and they are also seeking financial restitution, according to TMZ.
In spite of the fact that Mars’ song forms a critical part of the lawsuit, Mars himself is reportedly not listed as a plaintiff in this legal proceeding. (RELATED: The Beastie Boys Launch Lawsuit Against Popular Food Establishment)
