Schumer wants $20M to upgrade apple orchards

LOCKPORT — New York apple growers could improve their bottom lines if they grew more apples popular in the marketplace, such as Honeycrisp and other emerging varieties, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said Monday at an apple farm in Lockport.

The senator said he will soon introduce the APPLE Act — Apple Profit Protection for Local Economies Act — authorizing the U.S. Department of Agriculture to dole out $20 million annually in low-interest loans or grants to help farmers rip out trees of unprofitable apples and replace them with more lucrative varieties.
