Following social media giant Facebook’s crackdown on the private sale of firearms and ammunition, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters the administration welcomes the move.
“We welcome this step,” Earnest said during Monday’s briefing. “We talked about how the Internet is a loophole,” and the new commerce rules are a “common-sense effort to prevent guns from easily falling into the hands of criminals or other individuals who shouldn’t be allowed to access guns.”
On Friday, both Facebook and Instagram announced that “its users would no longer be able to offer or coordinate the private sale of guns and ammo,” the same guidelines Facebook uses to monitor the sale of both legal and illegal drugs.
